Making self care a priority - 15 powerful ways to self care

Self care can be described as the conscious engagement of an individual to promote their own health and well-being. Regulating time for yourself and putting your own interests first, can promote a happier lifestyle and encourage healthier habits.

Research has shown that self care can lead to higher levels of life satisfaction, better wellbeing and significantly reduce health related conditions such as stress and depression - which can worsen if not treated. Another important element in maintaining good health is eating well, regular physical activity and ensuring a good night’s sleep. Quality sleep in particular, is crucial to overall health and it has proven to help:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Boost your immune system
  • Lower the risk of type 2 diabetes
  • Increase concentration, productivity and alertness
  • Strengthen your heart - during sleep, you are giving your heart and blood vessels a rest

As well as maintaining good health and sleeping patterns, you can implement a few habits into your routine to promote better well-being. See below for a list of our favourite and inexpensive self care ideas:

Amp up your morning routine (wash your face with cold water, make a fresh juice or smoothie, avoid staring at a screen first thing in the morning)
Practice deep breathing exercises and meditation
Move your body (stretches, exercises, yoga)
List 10 things you are grateful for
A face mask pamper session, using ingredients from your pantry: oatmeal, honey, lemon or apple cider vinegar (or check out our Pamper Kit for a luxurious experience!)
Make a vision board and fill it with affirmations
Listen to an inspiring podcast and practise self reflection
Unfollow negative people from social media
Declutter an area in your home or wardrobe
Digital detox / unplug from technology
Spend a day outdoors or in nature
Take cold / hot showers (cold showers: increases alertness, accelerates your metabolism, stimulates the immune system, stimulates anti-depression hormones. Hot showers: relaxes muscles, reduces body tension, removes toxins from skin, reduces swelling)
♥ Bath with slices of lemon, cucumber and orange to detox and rejuvenate your skin - you will feel and see the difference!
Plan your weekly schedule ahead of time (allow for breaks and tackle unfavoured tasks early to get them out the way)
Stay hydrated and drink herbal tea (e.g. green tea, jasmine, peppermint, chamomile, hibiscus)

Self care is vital for our emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health. Incorporating some ideas into your daily or weekly routine, can make for a long-term, positive impact and you will instantly feel the difference.
